The Fishermen came back from sea, dragging their waste filled nets behind them and howling: FISH NO DEY, LOO ƐTA
̌
After months of fishing and catching nothing but plastic waste and rotting sea creatures, the fishermen gave up, deciding that it was no longer lucrative. Also, the Ministry of Health had released an official statement refraining the general public from eating fish from the Gulf of Guinea for fear of an outbreak of an unknown pandemic disease.
Regular farming practices didn’t work any more, crops were failing and people had to find alternatives. Due to this, the importation of agricultural produce from Rwanda had become the norm. But a group of Neo-Farmers had found new ways of farming; combining ancient farming techniques with modern biochemistry to make up for the food shortage. They were known as The nuAllamanda®️ Agricultural Institute. Their mandate: Creating a sustainable agricultural province for barren lands.
The seeds are first synthesized in the company’s research labs. The NeoFarmers, would then look for the perfect soil composition that would allow the seeds to grow. The soil should typically have a high concentration of Polyethylene which would allow the seeds to germinate quickly. If there isn’t as much plastic for the roots to feed on, polyethylene containers are recycled by being cut up, linked together and placed on the soil around the UV protected stem of the plant which would have been termed as manure in the old days. When the nuAllamanda begins to shed, the dry leaves and the recycled containers have a 63% chance of growing another plant
The germination period is between 2-3 weeks. In the third week, NeoFarmers report that they are likely to see the first seedling of the nuAllamanda®.They chose the Allamanda plant because of its significance in the preparation of traditional medicines and remedies. Its unmodified form could be used to treat liver tumors, jaundice, and Malaria; diseases that had surged in the past decades. What is being planted now gives off oxygen laced with a repellent for mosquitoes that is not harmful to humans. The NeoFarmers stated that they are in the process of releasing their second version of the plant (nuAllamanda) where the stalk from the boiled leaves will serve as a vaccine for HIV. After a millennia of Africans battling with the HIV virus this would certainly be a huge breakthrough for them.
Despite their discovery and innovation in the BioChem industry, the nuAllamanda Agricultural Institute have faced enormous setbacks and opposition from big pharma companies and governments across the world. The company posted a picture of their ranking in the biochem industry on Twitter last year, with the caption; “FUCK YALL!! WE DIDN’T EVEN NEED YOUR FUCKING PATENTS!”, becoming the year 3037’s most retweeted tweet.
The “plastic crops”, as nicknamed by tech journalists, are placed in separate rooms with different temperatures to test how well they grow in different climates. The beauty of plastic crops is that; it eradicates the incidence of sick crops because the seed casings produce a protective stem that helps prevent evolved pests and ultraviolet rays from harming the crop.
Scanning a leaf of the nuAllamanda®️ allows the NeoFarmer to check the plants Biodata; this pulls up the plants unique ID and it’s corresponding dashboard with a detailed infographic.
